Depression, Anxiety or Nutrition?

depressionOur bodies are growing increasingly sensitive and we are feeling symptoms much earlier on the disease chain than ever before. People are frequently feeling symptoms before it will even show up in labs. This creates a problem with getting any kind of diagnosis or help. I see 50-60 people a week in my office and 80-85% of them are so sick that it’s interfering with their daily lives. Many of these people cannot get any answers or a diagnosis in the medical community.

Medical doctors will frequently prescribe medication to squash the symptoms you are experiencing if your labs come back normal and they can’t diagnose you.  According to the CDC, the percentage of people in the United States using 1 prescription drug is 48.5%. The percentage of physician office visits resulting in prescription drugs is a staggering 75.1%. This is astonishing to me. The amount of money spent on prescription drugs has DOUBLED in the last 10 years.  Americans spend more on prescription drugs than any other country. According to the Center for Medicare and Medicaid, 2.9 trillion dollars was spent on prescription meds in 2013 and went up even more this past year.

Many of the side effects from medications create the need for more drugs to handle the reactions to the original drug. Symptoms range from stomach and digestive issues, to hives, fatigue, insomnia, headaches and much more. This situation is creating a never-ending chain of more and more meds just to be able to function. According to the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), the rate of antidepressant use in this country among teens and adults increased by almost 400% between 1988–1994 and 2005–2008. The federal government’s health statisticians figure that about one in every 10 Americans takes an antidepressant.  Antidepressants were the third most common prescription medication taken by Americans in 2005–2008. Now they are the second most common prescription med. There is a reason for that…

Many times, when a doctor can’t figure out a diagnosis for your symptoms, they will put you on anti-depressants or anti-anxiety meds (SSRI’s) because these drugs will make you stop feeling symptoms by affecting your brain and how it transmits information to the body. SSRI’s will mask what’s really causing your symptoms. This is confusing because it seems like the doctor was right and the meds are working because you don’t feel the symptoms anymore so it must have been psychosomatic! WRONG. The SSRI makes you stop feeling the symptom; but, the real underlying issue that was causing that symptom has not been identified or addressed so it continues to grow and spread. Only now, you are not feeling it anymore.  Down the road, you will be in big trouble when it turns into a more serious disease because the underlying source for those symptoms is being ignored.

Candida and fungal overgrowth mimic depression. Mineral malabsorption and mineral deficiencies and thyroid dysfunction can cause feelings of intense anxiety. Inflammation in the endocrine organs can manifest as depression. Certain types of parasites cause anxiety, insomnia and even nightmares. Metal fillings in the mouth leach mercury and get stuck in the tissues causing chronic sinus infections, fatigue, depression, and mineral malabsorption which can manifest as anxiety and cause fatigue. I can go on and on about the possibilities…..

You can experience symptoms from these imbalances and it WON’T SHOW UP IN LAB WORK because you are feeling the symptoms earlier on the disease chain. Your body’s “issue” has not degraded enough for an abnormal read on your labs. It’s that simple.

We are headed for real trouble if we don’t make some changes and take our health into our own hands by making informed choices!
